The name of this painting comes from the 1958 film, 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness'. The film is loosely based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, who was a missionary in China in the early 20th century. Together with Jeannie Lawson, another missionary, Aylward founded an inn which would provide hospitality for travellers. At the same time she would share stories about Jesus in the hopes of spreading the word about Christianity.

The Inn of 7th Happiness is envisioned as the Paradise promised by the Lord, the final destination for all Christian travellers. In the panel on the left, the weary couple are escorted to the Inn by Jesus. Inside, on the right, they celebrate the Eucharist and give thanks.
